What are Meta Tags?
Meta Tags are special hidden words in a website page. Search engines, like Google, look for these words and record them. They use the meta tags to rank pages in their search engine results. Your website may already include meta tags (depending on who developed your website). They may have been tailored specifically for your line of business. They help Search Engines give you a higher ranking when internet users are searching for services or products in your line of business.

Why Customise Meta Tags?
Changing meta tags on specific pages can help Search Engines index more pages, better. If a page on your website is of unique importance, customising the meta tags can be beneficial. The home page of a website about pets should have broad descriptions relating to pets. A page within the website dedicated to cats could be changed to contain meta tags that relate specifically to cats. Likewise with other sub-pages related cat toys, Persian Cats, or cat food.

To customise or edit your meta tags, your website has to have an administration facility that allows you to do so. Elure websites come with this facility as standard. If you would like more information about meta tags, their functions, and how to utilise them effectively, please contact us at Elure and we'll do our best to help.

The 3 Meta Tag Types and How To Use Them

There are three types of Meta Tags. Fill them all out. They each have a different function, but all three should use words related to the purpose of your page.

1) Meta title - This is the most important of the 3 Meta Tag Types. This appears as the title of your browser window, and also as the name of the application's tab. Search Engines will look at this as the most important thing to indicate what information is appearing on the page. It will record the title of a page and store it away for later reference, so that when a web user types in 'Persian Cats' to Google, your Pet website might be listed as a website with information on Persian Cats. Gramtically correct phrases are not necessary.

E.g. for home page of a pet website:
Pets R Us: Products, Food, Behaviour, Breeds

E.g. for sub-page on Persian cats:
Pets R Us: Persian Cats, Toys, Beds, Food

If you consider your business name irrelevant, exclude it and use words which internet users might be looking for. The more specific, the better.

2) Meta Description - Similar to the Meta title but with slightly less weighting in search engines. Ability to be more elaborate. Place all words or sentances that could not fit in the meta title. Gramatically correct phrases are not necessary.

E.g. for home page of a pet website:
Pamper your pets with Products and Food. Buy Online, understand pet behaviour and breeds. Pet Toys. Dogs, Cats, Birds, Fish.

E.g. for sub-page on Persian cats:
Persian Cat Behaviour, colours, toys, food. Blue Persian, White Persian. Buy Online

3) Meta Keywords - Less weighting with Search Engines again. A list of about 10 to 15 words that are used throughout the content of the page. Don't use punctuation or repeat key words. Spaces between words will suffice.

E.g. for home page of a pet website:
pets dogs cats birds mice rats fish order online learn school products food behaviour

E.g. for sub-page on Persian cats:
persian toy kitty kat circus mouse catnip cat toy fluffy wand persian bed sleep fun tunnel blue white
